A free, supervised active travel route to school and back
A generation ago, 70% ofprimary school children walked to school but this has dropped to just over half(51%).
According to a Sustrans survey 23.8% of school children reported that they arrived by car – the highest level since the survey began in 2008.
What is the Active Bus?
The Active Bus is a free and fun way to encourage your child to safely walk to school. It is supervised by a member of staff.
Your child can meet with friends and walk, cycle, wheel, run or even scoot to school and back again along a safe route. We want to keep kids active helping the environment along the way!
Who runs the Active Bus
The Active Bus is a partnership between R-evolve, Kingsland Parent Council and Scottish Borders Council School's Out!, which allows us to have as many children ride the 'bus' as possible.
What’s the Route?
Can I volunteer?
Yes, absolutely. The bus is supervised by an Active Bus leader but we welcome everyone to join and volunteers are essential to its success.
Who funds this project?
Now in its seventh year, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme supports local authorities in Scotland to encourage more active and sustainable travel choices.
This year, we have awarded £5 million of funding to local authorities to encourage less car use and more journeys by foot, bicycle, public transport and car share. Funds are supported by Transport Scotland.
How can my child join in?
Simply, bring your child along to the starting point of the route and inform our active busleader for the day. You will need to leave your contact details and you will be asked if you would like to join our WhatsApp group to keep in touch.
After day one, your child can attend by themselves and be escorted to and from school.
